the best thing about being abroad

i think the best thing about being abroad is that it gives you an excuse to be learning and growing all the time.

it is ok, even assumed, that you’re somewhat ignorant, that you’re a student of a culture, that you’re still figuring stuff out. you’re allowed (expected) to ask questions; to stumble over your explanations of things; to observe and listen before sharing your opinion.

coming from a community where criticism signals engagement and satire signals intelligence, it’s good to feel naiive, to question my own sardonic assumptions and to more fully understand just how culturally steeped and molded we all are.
